The coaches and parents of the Patriot Pulverizers would like to take this opportunity to help you get acquainted with the sport of Sporting Clays and the Wardlaw Team. Wardlaw has had a Sporting Clay (SC) Team/ Gun Club for a few years now but we are not sure how many of the parents are aware of this or even if the students understand the sport.
With the invention of video games, cell phones, texting and the loss of rural areas our kids are venturing less and less into the surrounding areas of nature. Remember when your mother put you outside and told you “see you when you are hungry or when it gets dark.” We would roam for miles. Well not today! Sporting clays give kids an opportunity to be exposed to nature and in particular shooting sports. Notice I said shooting sports not hunting. Some folks do not prefer to hunt but dearly love shooting sports; in particular SC. SCDNR has combined with the South Carolina Youth Shooting Foundation to bring shooting sports to the youth of South Carolina. Check out their website @ www.scysf.com.There are approximately five shoots each year. Various teams are represented from all across South Carolina. You have anywhere from 180 to 360 youth representing SCISC, 4H, and SCTP (Scholastic Clay Target Program). Following that you have a SCISA State Shoot and also a SCYSF State Championship shoot. The shoots are very organized and safety is not only stressed but essential. Gun safety is taught, demonstrated, and foremost expected to be used at all times. The shoots are on one Saturday a month beginning in December running through April. To be able to shoot as a member of a SCISA sporting clay team you have to be enrolled in grades 5-12. You can however shoot as a member of the SCYSF and the Wardlaw Gun Club beginning in grade 5. You must maintain a C letter grade to participate in all sports at Wardlaw Academy. In the past, practices have been on Sunday afternoons and do not interfere with church or any other Wardlaw team sports. Our thanks go out to the Carr’s for their generosity and support and allowing us to use their facilities to practice. Teams consist of three shooters paired by shooting ability and SCYSF/SCISA class requirements. The shooters scores are tabulated as team scores and also as an individual score. Team and individual honors are recognized. Sometimes we end the shoot with a cookout for all to enjoy!
